    Stickers? In The Commuter!?

    That’s right! If you picked up the October edition of The Commuter, you may have been one of the lucky 240 that got the fall/Halloween-themed stickers, plus you may be lucky enough to get them in the November issue as well! Look for them now in newsstands around the Albany campus.


    You may be asking yourself, “That’s cool, but why are they in there?”

    Well, it started as an idea to bring more student involvement into the publication. We at the paper are always looking for new ideas to bring a fresh perspective to The Commuter for all students, staff and faculty on campus to enjoy. Reaching out and making connections to students, the stickers are currently made by our on campus Art Club and Jesus Sandoval-Uribe, our comic strip creator.

    To say that our October editions were a hit would be an understatement. They went out quicker than 2025 World Series tickets …

    What are the future plans going forward? We would love to continue to support student artists through the stickers every month. The Commuter is currently looking for sponsors to support this endeavor to allow us to continue including them in the paper. If this is something you or a company may be interested in, please let us know!

Surfing the Pacific... The first time

     Being a kid you hear tales of the ocean being painted as a realm of immense power and enigmatic depths, teeming with unseen "creatures." Overcoming the primal fear of the “ocean” could lead to embracing it… In the form of surfing      Surfing has a long cultural history beginning around the 12th century in Hawaii among the Polynesians. It has had some interesting usages since then. Such as hunting for fish, traveling between islands, and, of course, as a sport for a lot of people.      When I was a kid, around 6, I was infatuated with the sport. From my parents subscribing me to the now-defunct SURFER magazine, to watching the surf teams on television during the Olympics or in person on the coast. The Hunt For The Unknown Sticker Part 2 - The Source

With Nick May of the Degree Partnership office out on an assignment, I sent him an email. “Yes, I commissioned those stickers with the help of Matt Scotton,” May later replied. If you recall from Part 1, Matt is the public information officer and external communications person for Linn-Benton. “As far as my contribution goes,” May continued, “I just wanted to have some fun/unique stickers to represent LBCC when I am tabling for DPP events. I get exposed to a lot of cool designs at OSU, so I ended up reaching out to Matt to get the ones you've seen mocked up!” ( Proof Sheet that May sent ) I scheduled a meeting with Nick on May 12, asking more about the stickers and the backstory.
